12/18/09 - Needham vs. Brookline
by Administrator on Sunday 20 December 2009

The Brookline Warriors let one get away tonight, squandering an 8pt lead with two minutes remaining to lose to Needham, 51-50. Starting the game flat and on their heals, the Warriors trailed after the first quarter, 15-5. Brookline got it going behind the outstanding play of senior swingman, Jacob Page(25pts, 6 rebs). Trailing 19-8, the guys in royal blue went on a 18-1 run, forcing Needham to call 2 timouts to try and halt the onslaught. The Warriors entered halftime up 8.

"We rallied from being down early, to play some really good basketball during the second quarter and through most of the 3rd," said Fiedor. "Jacob Page is quickly emerging as one of the better players in the Bay State League. He was immense tonight."

Brookline continued to press the action, opening things up to a 14 pt lead in the third and threatening to extend that margin. But a series of turnovers allowed Needham to hang around and more Warrior turnovers led to Needham being within striking distance.

"Needham switched to zone and our guys zoned out. It's hard to swallow this lose for all involved, because we had 18 turnovers in the second half, and almost all of them were self inflicted. Walks, three seconds, crazy passes, lack of aggression to the hoop. . .Needham was actually fouling us on purpose to put us at the line, but we literally turned the ball over before they could even do that." commented the Coach.

"In my mind, we lost this game at Thursday's practice. The practice started out bad, was good for awhile in the middle, and then ended badly with multiple turnovers. That's exactly what happened tonight. If we want to do anything of substance this year, we are going to have to grow out of that pattern of game preparation."

Needham scored with under 20 seconds to go to take the one point lead, 51-50. After a Brookline timeout to set up for the final shots, Chris Andrew had an open look that didn't fall, but the ball fell into Jacob Pages hands at the three point arc. His shot looked on the money, but went in and out at the buzzer.

Brookline travels to Norwood for a Monday Bay State match-up.
